Plans to transform the historic Georgian village of Royal Hillsborough can now be progressed, after Lisburn & Castlereagh City Council’s Planning Committee unanimously approved a new public realm scheme today (Monday 12 January 2026).

The scheme will deliver a major uplift to the look and feel of the village, enhancing streets and public spaces while protecting its unique heritage and historical significance. As part of the wider Belfast Region City Deal this scheme is the first phase of Destination Royal Hillsborough plans.

Alderman James Tinsley, Planning Chairman said: “The council submitted the planning application for the Royal Hillsborough Public Realm scheme following extensive consultation with stakeholders including statutory agencies, local residents and businesses. This scheme will significantly enhance the village landscape. Pedestrian safety is central to the design, and the scheme will also support future traffic management measures.

“I look forward to seeing the completed project, which will deliver improved pavements, heritage-style street furniture, enhanced drainage and clearer wayfinding signage and create a safer, more attractive village for residents and visitors.”

The council will now move to the next phase of design and then commence the process to appoint contractors to deliver the new public realm and infrastructure. The works will take place in carefully managed stages to ensure the village remains open and accessible throughout construction.

Improvements will be delivered across The Square, Main Street, Lisburn Street/Lisburn Road, Dromore Road, Park Street/Park Lane and Ballynahinch Street.
