The Mourne Mountains Gateway Project will redefine the visitor experience associated with the Mourne Mountains. The project includes the establishment of a Visitor Centre in the Mournes and the creation of a mountainside Gondola experience commencing in Donard Park, Newcastle. A visitor centre located at Thomas Quarry, will give visitors an opportunity to connect with nature’s rugged beauty, discover the secrets of the Mournes, and experience unobstructed views across Dundrum Bay, the Irish Sea and the Isle of Man.
The project will deliver a world-class international tourist attraction and more sustainable access, including better transport infrastructure and green travel options, to Newcastle and the Mournes for residents and visitors. By protecting and enhancing the natural heritage and habitat of the region and creating an appealing year-round, sustainable tourism offering, the project will also support the sustainable growth of tourism in the Mournes and will help to position the local area as one of the premier tourism destinations on the island.
